Students at the University of Nebraska at Kearney demonstrate their dance skills during An Evening of Concert and Dance on the campus Friday and Saturday, March 4-5.

“Many of the students participating are dance students and are involved because they enjoy dance,” said Leslie Abegglen, UNK dance lecturer and artistic director. Performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. in the Miriam Drake Theatre, which is located in the UNK Fine Arts Building.

According to Elizabeth Wethington, stage manager, all types of dance styles will be represented, including modern, ballet, jazz and hip hop.

The performance will open with hip hop choreographed to “Baby Got Back.” Wataru Shiomitsu and Yasuhiko Suzuki, both of Japan, did the choreography, which includes a series of pop-and-lock dance moves.

The dance performance also includes “Up” and “Fuego,” choreographed by Kathleen Albers of Hastings; “Colorblind” and “Vogue,” by Amanda Simmons of Aurora; “Genie (Tell Me Your Wishes),” by Hye Young Lee of Japan; “Valor,” by Karina Alvarez-Rodriguez of Lexington; “Love/Hurt Illusion,” by Codie Milford of Burlington, Colo.; and “Trip The Light Fantastic,” by Diedra Younghans of Hershey and Mark Wethington, UNK theatre assistant professor.

Closing the performance will be a four-part “Rodeo” performance, which includes “Buckaroo Holiday,” “Corral Nocturne,” “Saturday Night Waltz” and “Hoe Down.” Abegglen choreographed the 20-minute “Rodeo” dance routine, which closes the night’s performances with a humorous ending.

“‘Rodeo’ was originally choreographed for Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, but we are doing our own version with a different story line,” Abegglen said.

General admission tickets are $5 for the general public and free for UNK students. Reservations can be made by contacting the UNK Box Office at 308.865.8417 or by email at boxoffice@unk.edu.
