Platte River Jazz will be the featured performers on the Concerts-On-The-Platte series presented by the Department of Music & Performing Arts, Monday evening, October 4th, at 7:30 in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. Admission is free and the concert is open to the public.
The jazz sextet will present many different types of jazz from Louis Armstrong’s “Cornet Chop Suey” recorded in 1927 to Dave Weckl’s “Swamp Thing” from 1999. In between are great tunes like Woody Herman’s “Woodchopper’s Ball,” Chicago’s “Saturday In The Park,” Tadd Dameron’s “Ladybird,” along with other great tunes and arrangements. The styles of jazz are varied: swing, bossa nova & samba, R&B, ballad, funk, contemporary jazz and jazz waltz.
Bonnie Payne, UNK International Studies Outreach coordinator, will sing and play bass. Greg Sales, manager of Yanda’s Music and adjunct instructor of guitar at UNK, will perform on guitar. Greg Tesdall, a versatile and much-in-demand musician in Kearney, will play the saxophone and flute. Spencer Hansen, a music educator in the Lexington Public Schools and performing musician, will play trumpet and keyboard, as well as sing (but not all at the same time….). Mick Johnson, UNK’s piano technician, will perform on drums. Dr. Jim Payne, UNK music professor, will play trumpet and keyboard.
Come spend an enjoyable evening with your friends listening to these great musicians play great music. See you there.
