Student organizations compete for points in six separate categories to win the 2009 Homecoming Competition trophy.
Homecoming Week begins on Monday, Oct. 12, with “Deck the Halls” judging at 4 p.m. In this competition, student organizations will decorate banner paper and hang it in residential hall windows. Judging criteria is based on participation, originality/competition, promotion of Loper spirit, quality of workmanship, correlation of theme and overall affect.
On Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 4 p.m. a spirit competition will be held in the Hostetler Amphitheater, located east of the Fine Arts Building. Student groups will create a one minute cheer or spirit song, and will be judged on originality/creativity, enthusiasm/crowd response, promotion of the homecoming theme and time.
“Battle of the Brains” academic quiz bowl will be the competition on Wednesday, Oct. 14 at 3:30 p.m. Teams of six players will answer questions that cover all areas of academic knowledge. Points are earned for each correct answer and awards will be presented for the first, second and third place teams.
On Thursday, Oct. 15, beginning at 7 p.m. the annual Lip Sync Contest and Royalty Crowning will be held at the UNK Health and Sports Center. Student groups may use a maximum of 12 songs to perform to for four minutes. Judging will be based on appearance/costumes, originality and creativity, choreography, lip sync talent and song choice. Homecoming royalty will be crowned following the Lip Sync Contest.
A trike race will be held at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 16, at the Bell Tower Plaza. Each team will consist of two men, two women and an alternate of each sex. The teams race four laps around a marked track with each member completing one lap. The team with the fastest time will win.
Homecoming day on Saturday, Oct. 17, will begin at 10 a.m. with a parade down Central Avenue. Student floats will be judged on originality, identification with the theme, quality of workmanship and overall affect. Animation will earn competitors bonus points.
The winner of the homecoming parade student float and overall homecoming competition winners will be announced Saturday afternoon at half-time during the UNK football game.
Homecoming is sponsored by the Loper Programming and Activities Council (LPAC). LPAC president is Ashley Wegener of Humphrey. Homecoming chairs include Ben Fullerton of Neligh and McKenzie Wiese of Filley.
