More than 1,000 Local Area Band Students will Perform at the UNK Band Day Competition on Saturday, Sept. 26.

UNK– More than 1,000 local area band students will perform at the annual University of Nebraska at Kearney Band Day competition on Saturday, Sept. 26.

UNK Band Day is set to begin with a community parade at 10 a.m. downtown on “The Bricks.” A total of 19 area middle and high schools will compete for trophies by class.

The Sweepstakes Trophy will be awarded to the top performing ensemble. Other awards include Outstanding Drum Line, Auxiliary Unit/Color Guard and Drum Major. Last year, more than 5,000 people attended the activities.

“We are excited to welcome the 19 bands, and more than 1,000 band members and directors to the Kearney community for the 2009 Band Day Parade Competition,” said Dr. Neal Schnoor, UNK director of bands.

“Band Day is truly a community effort and would not be possible without collaboration with the Kearney Visitors Bureau, Jaycees, UNK Athletic Department, KGFW, “Kearney Hub,” Kearney Police Department, UNK Police and Parking Services, and Yandas Music and Pro Audio.”
