UNK– Romp at the Rec will be a new event featured during the annual University of Nebraska at Kearney Blue and Gold Welcome Week from 1-5 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 22, in the Cushing Coliseum.
“Romp at the Rec is an opportunity for new students to see what is offered in terms of Campus Recreation,” said Scot Fransk, UNK intramural coordinator. “Although I am told that it was an event some time ago, we are hoping to bring it back with additional life this year.”
According to Fransk, Cushing Coliseum will be open for general recreational use and there will be organized activities for individuals and small groups. Some activities include a free throw contest, badminton, volleyball and dodgeball.
“This is a way for students to see what UNK has to offer to help students live a healthy lifestyle and to meet other new students,” Fransk said.
Last year, one out of every six UNK students participated in an intramural activity, Fransk said. A total of 39 intramural activities are offered throughout the year and range from traditional sports like flag football, volleyball and basketball to more “in-style” activities such as dodgeball, broomball and Nintendo Wii tournaments.
“On top of that, an additional estimated 1,000 students took advantage of other campus recreation activities,” Fransk said. Other recreation activities include weight lifting, cardio, swimming, racquetball and open recreation.
