NEWS RELEASE:
UNK- The University of Nebraska at Kearney will travel “Through the Decades” as it celebrates Homecoming Week 2008 Monday, Oct. 6, through Saturday, Oct. 11.
For Homecoming Week, teams will be assembled from among the residence halls, Greek organizations and other student groups. Throughout the week, the teams will participate in a series of competitions to earn points, and at the end of the week, after all points are tallied, a team will be named the winner for Homecoming Week 2008. The week of events will begin with a limbo competition on Monday at 4 p.m. in the Nebraskan Student Union Courtyard.
On Tuesday, a spirit competition will take place at 4 p.m. in the Hostetler Amphitheatre. The format of the spirit competition is that groups will perform a sprit song or cheer, and judges will critique participants based on originality, enthusiasm and crowd response as criteria.
Additionally, there will be a banner competition on Tuesday. The event begins at 3:30 p.m. at the Fine arts amphitheatre. Teams are asked to create a banner modeled after the “Through the Decades” theme. Judges will rate banners based on creativity, spirit, workmanship and accordance with the theme.
A trike race will be held on Wednesday at 4 p.m. in the Nebraskan Student Union Courtyard. Competitors will be made of four-person teams, two men and two women. The team will race eight laps in a figure-eight racetrack.
On Thursday, the annual Lip Sync competition will be held in the UNK Health and Sports Center at 7 p.m. Organizations can enter more than one team, but they only earn points for their highest rated group. Judging will be based on appearance/costumes, creativity, choreography, lip synching accuracy and song choice.
After the competition, the 63rd annual royalty crowning ceremony will begin by introducing finalists and naming the 2008 king and queen.
A lawn display competition will take place on Friday. Judging for the lawn display competition will begin at 2 p.m. Acceptable posting locations include the fronts of residence halls and Greek houses, the south side of the Nebraskan Student Union and Foster Field.
The week’s events will conclude on Saturday with a parade starting at 10 a.m. For the parade, teams will assemble floats that are based on the homecoming theme or demonstrate Loper spirit for the UNK football team. Floats will be judged before the homecoming parade. The parade route will take participants down Central Avenue to 27 street and will finish near the Nebraskan Student Union.
At 1 p.m., the UNK football team will play New Mexico Highlands at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium at Foster Field.
