The University of Nebraska at Kearney Department of Music and Performing Arts presents the melodrama “The Gypsy’s Curse” Wednesday – Sunday, Feb. 20-24, at the Miriam Drake Theatre.
“The Gypsy’s Curse” is a melodrama in the old style written in the 1930’s by Charlotte Francis. The story focuses on brother and sister Horatio and Hortense Lovelace as they deal with their father’s recent death and Horatio’s recent marriage to his wife Mary.
UNK faculty member Janice Fronczak chose the script and directs the show.
“I went to Kearney Public Library and found the script,” she said. “It is something that we have never done.”
According to Fronczak, this melodrama is unique in that it allows the actors to interact with the audience.
“Reaction and participation from the crowd is encouraged,” Fronczak said. “This is definitely a family show.”
Among the cast is 11-year-old Rosamond Thalken of Kearney. Thalken, who portrays the character of Little Patience, was chosen through audition.
“I was looking for someone who had stage experience and could interact well with older students,” Fronczak said. “This is an opportunity to bring the Kearney community into UNK theatre.”
Tickets are $7 for adults; $5 for non-UNK students, seniors, and UNK Faculty/Staff; $3 for groups of 10 or more; and free for UNK students with a valid ID.
Show times are 7:30 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, Feb. 20-23, and 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 24. Reservations can be made by contacting the UNK Box office at 308-865-8417 or e-mailing boxoffice@unk.edu.
