TWENTY-SIX HIGH SCHOOL BANDS TO COMPETE AT UNK BAND DAY SATURDAY, SEPT. 30

As part of the University of Nebraska at Kearney Band Day celebration, 26 area high school bands will compete Saturday, Sept. 30.
    
Beginning at 9 a.m. led by the UNK Pride of the Plains Marching Band, the parade will begin at Central Avenue and Railroad, continue north to 27th Street, then proceed west on 27th Street to the UNK campus.
    
Competing Bands are judged in the following categories: pre-parade uniform/instrument/personal appearance inspection, marching execution, music performance, drum majors, drumline, colorguard/auxiliary unit.
    
Trophies will be awarded for highest point totals by class, as well as overall and special awards for outstanding drum major(s), drumline, and colorguard/auxiliary unit. Awards will be presented at half-time of the UNK vs. Mesa State football game.
    
“We are excited to welcome 26 bands, and more than 1,750 band members and directors to the Kearney community for the 2006 Band Day Parade Competition, “ said Dr. Neal Schnoor, director of the UNK Pride of the Plains marching band.  “We are also excited that the Aurora High School Band directed by Dan Sodomka will share a half-time performance with our UNK Band.”
    
The Aurora High School Band will feature selections from Westside Story by Leonard Bernstein during half-time of the UNK vs. Mesa State football game.
    
“Band Day is truly a community effort made possible by the collaboration of the Kearney Visitors Bureau, Jaycees, UNK Athletic Department, UNK Parking Services, KGFW, Kearney Hub  and the Kearney Police Department,” Dr. Schnoor said.
