Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) at the University of Nebraska at Kearney recently took top honors in the Financial Literacy category at the Miami (Fla.) Regional SIFE Competition.
According to Dr. Susan Jensen, UNK assistant professor of management and the UNK SIFE adviser, the team brought home a $500 prize and a trophy.
“We had a wonderful time in Miami, and came away with lots of project ideas and tips for making their team even stronger,” Dr. Jensen said. “The competition was quite keen with 80 percent of the teams participating in the Miami competition being previous regional or national champs.” SIFE is an organization on more than 1,500 campuses in 37 countries.
“The concept that makes the organization unique and successful is one of working as teams,” said Marsha Yeagley, a senior lecturer in marketing and MIS. “SIFE students design educational outreach projects that help individuals in their communities develop a better understanding of the concept of free enterprise, and how to use it to empower themselves and others.”
Yeagley also noted that the UNK SIFE chapter was involved in the development and implementation of $mart Money Week at UNK last fall. This event educated people of all ages regarding the use of money and helped the SIFE group prepare for the Financial Literacy competition.
