Ismael Torres, a health educator at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, recently received the American College Health Association Affiliate New Professional Award, which honors distinguished members of college health organizations.
“His enthusiasm is contagious,” said Dr. LeAnn Obrecht, director of UNK Counseling & Health Care, in describing Torres.
Each spring, the ACHA holds a national conference, where they take nominations for the Affiliate New Professional Award for each of the six ACHA regions. Torres won the award for the Central College Health Association region, which consists of colleges and universities in Nebraska, Missouri and Kansas.
Dr. Obrecht said that most colleges that have a student health organization belong to ACHA, which serves to promote research in student health policies.
References for Torres included students, colleagues, supervisors and UNK administrators. Aside from his strong list of references, Dr. Obrecht said that his character was a major factor in his selection for the Affiliate New Professional Award.
“He has a refreshing and very positive influence on anyone who comes in contact with him,” Dr. Obrecht said. He’s a huge catalyst and mentor for college students.” Torres is a UNK alum.
