Members of the Chancellor’s Leadership Class  at the University of Nebraska at Kearney are responding to the call for help for the victims of hurricane Katrina.

The 26-member, all-freshmen group is raising money on the campus and in the Kearney community today through Tuesday, Sept. 13.

“The students are accepting donations in the form of cash or checks, made payable to the American Red Cross,” said Cami Wacker, adviser for the group and the UNK associate director of Student Development and Retention. The leadership class will also be asking area businesses for donations or a pledge to match funds they raise.

“I plan to do all I can to support the class,” Wacker said. “It will take a collaborative effort, however, with members of this community to make the project successful.”

The 26 members of the organization were selected for membership in the Chancellor’s Leadership Class from among 71 applicants, based on their high school GPA, involvement and accomplishments, along with an application and three required essays.

“The class studies leadership from many perspectives, including character, courage and credibility,” Wacker said. “The purpose of the class is to give students the ability to be good leaders, not just while they are on campus, but also in the world beyond UNK.

“Although this project is completely voluntary, every student in the class has made an effort to help in some way,” Wacker said.
