The University of Nebraska at Kearney’s third annual Fun 5K Walk Run is set for 8 a.m. Saturday, April 16, on the campus.
The Fun 5K is free for UNK students and $15 for non-UNK students. Entry forms are available at the information desk in the Nebraskan Student Union or by calling 308-865-8523. Entries received after April 8 will be assessed a late fee–$10 for UNK students and $20 for all others.
“We had about 225 participants last year and are hoping to have 300 or more this year,” said Jami Schaffnitt, coordinator of student activities at UNK. “We hope to have more community participants this year as well.”
A new route has been established for the race this year.
“We are bringing the race to campus,” Schaffnitt said. “The event will start just west of the Health and Sports Center. We will then go east, past the Fountain, and circle the campus, ending up at the Student Union.” A short awards ceremony and refreshments will take place after the race.
Each Participant will receive a free t-shirt. First, second and third places will be awarded a combination of merchandise, cash and gift certificates from community businesses. More than $1,000 in merchandise and gift certificates were donated last year.
Other cash donations and proceeds from the Fun 5K will go towards a student leader scholarship fund.
