On July 1, the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus will celebrate the anniversary of the campus officially becoming a university and joining the University of Nebraska system.

UNK Chancellor Doug Kristensen will address a picnic gathering at noon. The Mall Picnic, catered by Chartwells, will be from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. north of the Cope Memorial Fountain. The picnic lunch will be $4.50.

The university was originally founded in 1903 as Nebraska State Normal School at Kearney. As the institution’s mission changed, so did the institution’s name. In 1921, the name was changed to Nebraska State Teachers College at Kearney, and then in 1963, the campus was renamed Kearney State College in 1963. The July 1 Celebration commemorates the campus achieving university status in 1991.

Activities for the July 1 Celebration were organized by the UNK Staff Senate. Other activities for UNK employees include a 7:30-8:30 a.m. complimentary continental breakfast in the Nebraskan Student Union Food Court, courtesy of Chartwells food service. From 2:30-3:30 p.m. at the Conrad Hall Patio, Residential and Greek Life will provide complimentary popcorn for UNK faculty, staff, students and administrators.
