University of Nebraska at Kearney Chancellor Doug Kristensen announced the appointment of Dr. Larry Hardesty as Dean of UNK’s Calvin T. Ryan Library.

Dr. Hardesty is currently college librarian for Austin College in Sherman, Texas. He has served in that capacity for nearly nine years. Previously, he was the director of Library Services and professor at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Fla., and he also served as head of the reference department at Depauw University in Greencastle, Ind. In addition, from 1973 to 1975, he was assistant to the director and director of the Library Learning Program at Kearney State College.

He was a magna cum laude graduate of KSC in 1969, with a B.A. in education (history/political science). He went on to earn a master’s degree in education from KSC in 1971. He also holds a master’s degree in education from Indiana University, a master’s degree in Library Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and the Ph.D. from the School of Library and Information Science at Indiana University. His research record includes more than 50 major publications and an equally long list of major presentations at scholarly meetings.

Dr. Hardesty has also been active in professional organizations at all levels. He has been the president of the Association of Colleges & Research Libraries, and he was named the national Academic/Research Librarian of the Year in 2001. In 2002, he received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from UNK.

In making the announcement, Chancellor Kristensen said: “It will be truly a pleasure to welcome Larry Hardesty to our leadership team and back to the UNK community.”

Dr. Hardesty, after approval by the Board of Regents, will begin July 2, 2004. He will also hold an appointment as professor of library.
