Dr. Thomas Martin
professor of philosophy, 308.865.8298

The University of Nebraska Kearney recently announced the recipients of the 2002-2003 O.K. Bouwsma and Don Welch Family Scholarships. These scholarships are awarded through the department of philosophy. The O.K. Bouwsma scholarship was created by a $200,000 gift from an anonymous donor and is named after O.K. Bouwsma who was a professor of philosophy at the University of Nebraska from 1928-1965. He was a leading scholar and noted as an outstanding teacher. During his tenure, he received the “Outstanding Nebraskan” faculty award.

The scholarships are awarded to the top students who have submitted a philosophical essay to the competition. The essays are read, judged and ranked by the members of the philosophy department.

Dr. Welch, a 1954 UNK graduate, was an English professor at the University of Nebraska at Kearney from 1959 to 1997. He was hailed as a Nebraska poet and emeriti faculty member.
