The James E. Smith World Affairs Conference will begin it’s first full day of discussion Mon., March 5. Discussion topics for the day include, “Eastern European Education in Transition,” “Travel Observations,” “Art and Physics: Parallel Visions in Space, Light, and Time,” “Health Conditions in Lithuania,” “A Long-Term Response to the Chernobyl Disaster,” and “Education, Language, and Cultural Rights in Southern Africa.”
The Keynote Address to be given by Leonard Schlain, M.D., will take place Monday evening at 7:30 in the Drake Theatre of the Fine Arts Building. Shlain’s presentation is entitled The Alphabet vs. the Goddess: The Conflict Between Word & Image. Shlain will explore the relationships between language, gender and power.
Dr. Shlain is Associate Professor of Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco, Medical School and is the Chief of Laparoscopic Surgery at California Pacific Medical Center. The World Affairs conference will continue on Tues., March 6 with another full day of discussion.
