UNK STUDENT FINALIST FOR PRESTIGIOUS TRUMAN SCHOLARSHIP

Andrea Walton, a political science major at the University of Nebraska at Kearney, from Gordon, has been selected as a finalist for the prestigious Truman Scholarship. Walton is one of four Nebraska student selected for the competition, and was nominated by the UNK Political Science Department.

The Truman Scholarship has three components in its selected; academic record, community involvement and most importantly, that the student is interested in a career in public service.

“Andrea embodies all the qualities of a Truman Scholar. She is an excellent student and has a substantial service record to both the institution and the community,” said Ken Nikels, dean of graduate studies and research.

In addition, Walton has assumed and been successful in her leadership roles on campus, most notably with the Native American Student Association, and her career goal is in the area of public service. She has also been a very active student-scholar during her three years at UNK, and will be participating in next month’s National Conference on Undergraduate Research for the second consecutive year.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Andrea, and she will represent UNK in the competition,” Nikels said.

The competition for the Truman Scholarship consists of a full day of interviews in front of a panel of judges. Walton’s interview is in Denver on Friday, March 9.
