Kearney, Neb., April 11, 2013 – The Xi Phi Chapter of Mortar Board, a national senior honor society, announced its new members for the upcoming academic year at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
The formal induction of the 24 new members will occur on April 19. The members of Mortar Board were selected based on his or her accomplishments in scholarship, leadership and service during their academic careers at UNK.
There are 229 Mortar Board chapters nationwide.
The new members are listed below, alphabetically, by hometown.
Nebraska
Anselmo – Michael Christen, son of Mark and Robin Christen of Anselmo, is majoring in mathematics and minoring in finance. He has been a member of Student Senate for three years and has served as the chair of Student Programming board for two years. Christen is on the Student Activities Budget Commission, the Faculty Student Affairs Committee and is a Newman Center council member. He is a Dean’s List student, a member of the Chancellor’s Leadership Class and a Student Ambassador. Christen is also a member of Phi Eta Sigma and Kappa Mu Epsilon.
Bennington – Nicole Connor, daughter of Bruce and Beth Connor of Bennington, is a business administration major with an emphasis in accounting and a minor in Spanish. She is the secretary of the treasury to the student body president, treasurer of Enactus, treasurer of Alpha Mu Gamma and a member of Cornerstone UNK. Connor is a member of the Honors Program and is a Dean’s List student.
Brunswick – Sarah Meuret, daughter of Jim and Laurie Meuret of Brunswick, is majoring in psychobiology and minoring in pre-med. She is a member of the Alpha Phi sorority and has been Marshal, manager of New Member Education and the director of ceremonies. Meuret is also the treasurer for Order of Omega, a member of the Health Science Club, the Newman Center and the Friends Program. She is a Dean’s List student and received the Character Development Award for the Alpha Phi Sorority.
Dorchester – Adam Kahle, son of Ron and Joyce Kahle of Dorchester, is majoring in both exercise science and chemistry, with a minor in health science. He is the mentoring coordinator of the Honors Student Activities Board, vice-president of the Health Science Club, a Chancellor’s Ambassador, and a middle and high school FCA Huddle leader. Kahle is a Dean’s List student, a recipient of the Kearney Health Opportunities Program Scholarship, a member of Phi Eta Sigma, a Top Organic Chemistry Student and participated in Organic Chemistry and Exercise Physiology research.
Elkhorn – Kayla Hansen, daughter of Jeff and Tanya Hansen of Elkhorn, is majoring in elementary education and special education. She is a member of Alpha Phi, Kappa Delta Pi and is a Dean’s List student.
Genoa – Brandon Drozd, son of Edward and Janice Drozd of Genoa, is an organizational communication major. He is the president of the Interfraternity Council and previously was vice- president of community service/philanthropy. Drozd was the pledge class president of Phi Gamma Delta and president of the fraternity. He is a Dean’s List student, a Chancellor’s Student Ambassador, a member of the Lambda Pi Eta Communication Honor Society and the Honors Program. Drozd is the recipient of the 2010 UNK Family of the Year-Honorable Mention, 2012 FIJI Outstanding Scholar Award, 2011 FIJI Brother of the Year Award and the 2010 FIJI Rising Leader Award.
Grand Island – Amanda Swenson is the daughter of Mary and Ken Grashorn, and Darrel and Joanne Swenson. She is majoring in business administration with emphases in finance and management. Swenson is the vice-president of Order of Omega, and chapter treasurer; vice-president of Academic Development; and vice-president of cmmunications for Alpha Omicron Pi. She is co-president of the Society for Human Resource Management. Swenson is a Dean’s List student, a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Honorary Business Society, and the recipient of the Outstanding Junior Management award and Emerging Greek Leader of the Year award.
Kearney – Lisa Klingelhoefer of Kearney is the daughter of Mark Klingelhoefer and Janet Hageman. She is majoring in business administration with an emphasis in marketing and is minoring in international business and public health. Klingelhoefer is the president of the Study Abroad organization, and a member of Alpha Phi. She is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, and is the recipient of the 2012 UNK and University of Nebraska Student Worker of the Year award and is the Kay Payne Undergraduate Case Competition runner up. Klingelhoefer was also accepted to present at the National Conference of Undergraduate Research, and to the Nebraska Semester Abroad program and India: Critical Issues.
Kearney – Shelby Maloley, daughter of Vicky Maloley of Kearney, is majoring in psychobiology with a minor in pre-med. She is a member of the Alpha Phi sorority, and participated in the Medical Mission Trip to the Dominican Republic with Health Science students. Maloley is a Dean’s List student, a member of the Honors Program, and a recipient of the Greek Life Achievement Award and the Kearney Health Opportunities Program.
Kearney – MaryAnn Pelc, daughter of Kim Pelc of Kearney, is majoring in biology with an emphasis in health science. She is a member of the Health Science Club and Phi Eta Sigma. Pelc is a Chancellor’s Student Ambassador, a SF International student leader, an Honors Program freshman mentor; and has participated in Campus Community Assembly Nights, Big Event, the Alzheimer’s Walk and international travel and volunteer work in Japan and South Korea. She is a Dean’s List student, in the Honors Program; and a recipient of the Honors Scholarship, the KHOP Scholarship, Regents scholarship, Biology Department scholarship, Sorenson Family scholarship and DAR scholarship.
Kearney – Abby Riese, daughter of John and Julie Riese of Kearney, is majoring in psychobiology. She is a member of Alpha Phi sorority, and was the freshman class representative on the Membership Development Committee, the historian and the director of scholarship. Riese is a Friends program mentor, Royal Family Kids Camp counselor, and a participant in the Dominican Republic Medical Mission Trip, Honey Sunday, Big Event, St. Jude Up till Dawn, a volunteer for Goodfellows Christmas and Class Act. She is a Dean’s List student, received the Greek Life Achievement Award and is a Kearney Health Opportunities Program Scholar.
Lincoln – Karlee Nuttelman, daughter of Kathy and Randy Nuttelman of Lincoln, is majoring in K-12 health with endorsements in physical education field and interscholastic coaching. As a member of Gamma Phi Beta sorority, she has been the vice president of membership, vice- president of public relations and vice-president of education. Nuttleman has also served as vice- president of external recruitment and vice-president of leadership for the Panhellenic Council, as well as membership chair of Order of Omega. She is a Dean’s List student, a member of the Honors Program, Phi Eta Sigma, Kappa Delta Pi and received the award for Highest Freshman GPA in Gamma Phi Beta.
Lincoln – Amanda Ullman, daughter of Dan and Shari Ullman of Lincoln, is majoring in philosophy with minors in psychology and Spanish. She is a member on the Newman Center Council, secretary for the Psychology Club and Yoga Community. Ullman is the recipient of the Omaha World Herald/ Kearney Hub Scholarship and the O.K. Bouwsma Scholarship.
McCook – Andrew Broadfoot, son of Greg and Nancy Broadfoot of McCook, is majoring in business administration with an emphasis in management. He is a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. For FIJI, Broadfoot was recording secretary in 2012 and the treasurer in 2013. He is also a member of the Honors Program, Order of Omega and Beta Gamma Sigma.
North Platte – Rick Poppe, son of Leland and Cathy Poppe of North Platte, is a biology major with minors in chemistry and business administration. He is a team member of cross country, indoor track and outdoor track teams. Poppe is a member of Student Senate and chair of the selections and constitutional review committee, host of UNK’s BlueTube, and a Chancellor’s Ambassador. He is a Dean’s List student, KHOP Scholar, Omaha World Herald/ Kearney Hub Scholar, RMAC All-Academic Honor Roll and the 2012 Cross Country Letter Winner.
Omaha – Erin Hullinger, daughter or Rick and Lori Hullinger of Omaha, is majoring in dual field endorsement in elementary education and mild to moderate disabilities. She is the chapter president of Alpha Phi and former director of administration and director of alumnae relations. Hullinger is the membership co-chair for Order of Omega and former vice president of programming and social for Panhellenic Executive Council. She is a Dean’s List student and a recipient of the Delta Xi Alumnae scholarship.
O’Neill – Erin Gotschall, daughter of Jim and Leann Gotschall of O’Neill, is majoring in psychology and pre-occupational therapy, with a minor in health science. She is the secretary of Order of Omega, on the Campus Kitchen leadership team, a member of Christian Student Fellowship and a participant in the Dominican Republic Medical Mission Trip. Gotschall is the new member educator for Alpha Omicron Pi, and was vice-president of chapter development in 2012. She is a Dean’s List student, a member of the Honors Program, Phi Eta Sigma, Order of Omega, Psi Chi Honor Society and a recipient of the Chancellor’s Scholarship.
Ravenna – Michael Bohn, son of Lonnie and Marilyn Bohn of Ravenna, is majoring in psychobiology and minoring in pre-med. He is a re-founding father of Phi Delta Theta, vice president of Phi Delta Theta and a bassist in Jazz/Rock. Bohn is a Dean’s List student.
Roscoe – Blair Youngs, daughter of Keith and Jeri Youngs of Roscoe, is majoring in organizational communication. She is a student diplomat and member of Loper Liaisons; and vice-president of communications and vice-president of recruitment for Alpha Omicron Pi. She is a member of the Honors Program and on the executive board for St. Jude. Youngs is a Dean’s List student, a member of Order of Omega and a recipient of the Outstanding Leaders Council Scholarship.
Shelton – Kara Loeffler, daughter of David and Sharmond Loeffler of Shelton, is majoring in parks and recreation management. She is a Student Diplomat, a member of the forensics team, president of the Pi Kappa Delta Honor Society, president of the Recreation Club, Loper Liaisons vice-president of high school visits, and a Welcome Week Leader. Loeffler is a Dean’s List student and a three-time national qualifier for forensics.
Spencer – Chaney Black, daughter of Rex and Melanie Black of Spencer, is majoring in business administration with an emphasis in accounting, and minoring in marketing/management. She is a member of the Honors Program, Phi Eta Sigma, and volunteers with the Big Friend, Little Friend program. Black is a Dean’s List student and a member of Beta Gamma Sigma.
Sutherland – Regan VanSkiver, daughter of Ron and Rhonda VanSkiver of Sutherland, is majoring in psychobiology, with a minor in pre-physician’s assistant. She has been president and vice-president of standards for Alpha Omicron Pi, is the supplemental instruction leader for anatomy and physiology; a team leader for Campus Kitchen; and participated in a Medical Missions Trip to the Dominican Republic. VanSkiver is a member of Order of Omega, the National Residence Hall Honorary, Psi Chi-Psychology Honor Society, and recipient of several scholarships including the Board of Regents, the O.K. Bouwsma Philosophy Scholarship and the Southern California Alumni Association Scholarship.
Wayne – Halsey Lutt, daughter of Mike and Rhonda Lutt of Wayne, is majoring in business administration and minoring in accounting. She is a Chancellor’s Ambassador, a New Student Enrollment Leader, a member of the Honors Program, the Accounting and Finance Society, the College of Business and Technology Student Advisory Board and a Student Diplomat. Lutt is the recipient of the College of Business and Technology Dean’s Academic Excellence Award.
Out-of-State
Colorado Springs, Colo. – Jordan Bloesser, daughter of Rocky and Gaye Bloesser of Colorado Springs, is majoring in business administration with an emphasis in management, and minoring in finance. She is vice-president of the Honors Student Activities Board, vice-president of Phi Eta Sigma, on the leadership team for Fellowship of Christian Athletes and a member of the women’s cross country and track teams. Bloesser is a Dean’s List student, a member of the Honors Program and the Beta Gamma Sigma Business Honor Society. She has also received the Honors Program scholarship and the Track and Field scholarship.
