On Nov. 18-22 the ninth annual Disability Awareness Week will take place at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. On Tuesday from 4 p.m. – 5:30 p.m., Disability Relays will take place at the UNK Health and Sports Center. The relays feature teams of four students, faculty or staff who compete in events such as hoop shoot and wheelchair races.
On Wednesday from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m. in the College of Education adaptive technology demonstrations will take place. Guest speaker Ron Gustafson will speak about “Turning a Set-back into a Come-back!” at 7 p.m. – 8 p.m. in the Ponderosa room 238A in the Nebraskan Student Union.
A panel of experts will address the issue of, “are accommodations really special privileges?” in the Nebraskan Student Union, on Thursday at 12 p.m. This issue will be addressed again at 3:30 p.m. in the College of Education Conference Room.
According to Kristen Larsen, Student Support Services, “Disability Awareness Week is to educate, inform and promote understanding of what it is like to be a person with a disability, particularly a college student with a disability.” The programs “focus on accessibility of campus facilities and higher education, as well as personal coping skills and the possibilities open to persons with disabilities,” she said.
