Country music singer/songwriter Chris Cagle is the featured entertainer for the University of Nebraska at Kearney Loper Programming and Activities Council spring concert Thursday, April 26.
“The students looked at a lot of different performers – rock, alternative, country – and he was the performer the students were the most interested in,” said Tim Danube, associate director of the Nebraskan Student Union.
“Selecting a performer for a spring concert is a difficult process,” he said. “The students have to coordinate price, scheduling for the Health & Sports Center, and the availability of the artists.”
“For example, Julie Roberts, who is the opening act, just came back from Iraq where she was touring for the soldiers,” he said. Previous years, the students have brought Vertical Horizon (’01), Kenny Chesney (’99) and the Golden Dragon Acrobats.
“The Loper Programming Council students are a great bunch of students to work with,” he said, adding that the group meets weekly.
Country music singer/songwriter Cagle, a Texas native, quickly broke onto the country music scene with his debut single “My Love Goes On and On.” The song showcased not only his vocal and songwriting talent, but also his dynamic no-frills stage presence.
His debut album Play It Loud also produced his first number one hit, “I Breathe In, I Breathe Out,” as well as the hit singles “Laredo” and “Country By The Grace of God.” His second album, Chris Cagle, debuted as #1 on Billboard’s Top Country Albums chart and spawned two more Top 5 hits, “What A Beautiful Day” and “Chicks Dig It.” Both albums were certified gold by the end of 2003. In October of 2005, Cagle introduced his Anywhere But Here album. The debut single, “Miss Me Baby,” soon became another hit for Cagle, marking the eighth time he has hit the top 40 with a song he has written or co-written. His latest single, “Wal-Mart Parking Lot” is a tale about coming-of-age in a small-town. The single jumped 13 spots on the country singles chart just one week after its debut.
Country music artist Julie Roberts, who will open for Cagle, is known for her deep, blues-soaked voice. Roberts has quickly become a favorite of fans and fickle music critics alike. Her music is a blend of country and blues that both embraces country’s heritage and reveals a fresh, contemporary sound.
Her debut hit “Break Down Here” was described as one of country’s best ballads. Julie’s self-titled debut album was certified gold and led to two Horizon Award nominations from the Country Music Association, as well as a Top New Artist nomination and a Top New Female Vocalist nomination from the Academy of Country Music Awards. It was also nominated for a Breakthrough Artist nomination from CMT Awards. Now with her second album, Men & Mascara, Roberts proves she’s in it for the long run.
The Thursday, April 26, concert will take place at 7 p.m. in the UNK Health and Sports Center; doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Tickets are available for UNK Students with a valid Student ID at the Nebraskan Student Union Welcome Desk for $7 in advance. Student tickets are $15 at the door.
