Students at the University of Nebraska at Kearney are challenging area students and community members to participate in this year’s American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life. The 2002 Tri-City College Relay for Life will be held on February 8-9 at the Tri-City Arena in Kearney. The Relay For Life is an overnight, team effort to raise funds for the American Cancer Society’s research, advocacy, education, and patient service programs. “Cancer does not stop for nighttime,” said Dani Lively, UNK Volunteer Co-Chair. “So we’re not going to stop for nighttime either. We hope the community will join us in this fight.” The event begins at 6 p.m. on Friday with a cancer survivor’s lap. At 10 p.m. will be the luminaria lighting ceremony and at 6 a.m. will be the closing ceremony. Teams of 8 to 15 members will gather to participate in the largest fund-raising walk in the nation.
The special luminaria ceremony will remember those lost to cancer and honor those who have survived. Luminaria candles will be lit at the Tri-City Arena to represent the individuals. Each luminaria candle is $10. “It will be beautiful when all the bags with candles are illuminated around the arena,” said Lively. “We hope to sell enough to light the entire area.”
The Relay For Life brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, churches, and people from all walks of life. The teams will seek donations prior to the relay with the goal of supporting the discovery of the cure for cancer. “No matter what age you are, cancer affects you and those close to you. This is a way to fight back against this dreaded disease. Funds from the Relay For Life will support the American Cancer Society’s programs for cancer patients, prevention and early detection education, advocacy efforts, and lifesaving cancer research,” said Christi Erickson, American Cancer Society Staff.
