The Japanese Association at Kearney (JAK) will host their fifth annual Japanese fall festival celebration, Matsuri, in the University of Nebraska at Kearney Nebraskan Student Union Great Room from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 4.
The festival, which is free and open to the public, will feature three main exhibits of traditional Japanese culture. The exhibits will include demonstrations, performances of Japanese songs and dances, and three Japanese foods.
“Because the UNK Japanese students work very hard on this, the Japanese fall festival is an outstanding event,” said Corliss Sullwold, JAK adviser. “Matsuri is always well attended, so food will be available on a first-come, first- served basis.”
JAK students will be serving three Japanese dishes including Dango, a Japanese sweet made of rice powder and sweet bean sauce; Yakisoba, a Japanese-style noodle with vegetables; and Teriyaki, which is chicken seasoned in teriyaki sauce.
The JAK booth will showcase three different Japanese customs including a Japanese tea ceremony, calligraphy and Kendo. A presentation by students in the Japanese100 class will also be offered. Information about the Sakura Festival Project will be available at the booth as well.
Three performances will be done for the public on stage. A Solan dance and Japanese songs will be performed, and Kendo will be demonstrated.
