Gambling in Nebraska will be put “on trial” at the 8th Annual Sen. Jerome Warner Evening on Tuesday, Sept. 28, at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
The evening will begin with an informal discussion and picnic supper beginning at 5 p.m. on the lawn just east of the Fine Arts Building. From 6:30- 8 p.m.,Gambling — Your Verdict, a mock trial discussing gambling in Nebraska, will take place in the Fine Arts Recital Hall. The picnic dinner and taping are free and open to the public; however, seating is on a first-come, first-served basis for the taping. Guests must arrive by the scheduled taping time and will not be seated after taping begins.
According to the Nebraska ETV Network (NETV), the issue of whether to bring blackjack and slot machines inside Nebraska’s borders is one of the most prominent questions that will appear on the November election ballot in Nebraska. The NETV special election program, Gambling — Your Verdict: A Nebraska Connects Special,” addresses the controversy surrounding the expanded gambling issue using the technique of a courtroom trial, with both sides presenting their arguments for and against the issue. To help voters reach their own “verdict,” expanded gambling advocates and opponents will argue their cases, and question witnesses they and their opponents have selected.
The simulated courtroom proceedings featured in Gambling — Your Verdict: A Nebraska Connects Special is being taped as part of the Sen. Jerome Warner Evening. The special airs at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, on NETV. It repeats on NETV at 9 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14. The program will be rebroadcast on NETV2 at 10 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9; 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12; and 9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13.
According to Dr. Peter Longo, chair of the UNK Department of Political Science, the event honors the late State Sen. Jerome Warner’s service to the state by bringing prominent Nebraska public servants to UNK.
The UNK political science department along with Nebraska Public Television and the University of Nebraska Public Policy Center are cosponsoring the evening.
