The University of Nebraska at Kearney Reynolds Writers & Readers Series will present short story writer Gerald Shapiro at 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 18, at the Museum of Nebraska Art (MONA).
Shapiro teaches creative writing and literature at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, where he is also a reader for Prairie Schooner. His short story collections From Hunger received the Edward Lewis Wallant Award for Jewish Fiction. Another of his works, Bad Jews, was a finalist for the 2000 National Jewish Book Award for Fiction. The collection Little Men was a winner of the Ohio State University Prize in Short Fiction. He was also a recipient of the Merit Award from the Nebraska Arts Council’s Individual Artists Fellowship program in 1997. Shapiro’s stories have appeared inPloughshares, Witness, Kenyon Review, Gettysburg Review, Missouri Review,Quarterly West andSouthern Review.
Shapiro lives in Lincoln with his wife Judith Slater, who is a fiction writer.
According to Charles Fort, who holds the UNK Reynolds Chair in Poetry and directs the series, the series allows people to become better acquainted with the visual and literary arts.
Reynolds Writers & Readers Series presentations are free and open to the public. In addition to Shapiro, four writers have upcoming presentations in the series. Each reading begins at 8 p.m. with a book signing and reception afterwards. For more information, contact Charles Fort at (308) 865-8164.
