2020 Vision and Technology Leadership Forum: Diamonds in the Making will take place at the University of Nebraska at Kearney from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1.
The program, which features career opportunities in the telecommunication field, is designed for high school and middle school students, administrators, teachers and technology coordinators.
The event will be co-hosted by the UNK Telecommunications Management Program and Educational Service Unit 10. Frontier Communications has sponsored the cost for all high school students attending.
The morning session will feature Dr. Ron Tuttle, a UNK professor of industrial technology, who will give an in-depth overview of current Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology. The session will take place in the Frontier VoIP laboratory, which was recently donated by Frontier Communications to the UNK Telecommunications Management Program. The session will demonstrate how VoIP is implemented in data networks and how it operates on the network. This session will provide an opportunity for students to experience VoIP in a hands-on environment.
The afternoon session will be divided into two educational sessions. The first, presented by Mike Farrell, account manager at Nortel, will feature information about a new multimedia server designed to facilitate more media rich content via the Web. The session will lend insight into the future of data networks and will provide an overview of the career opportunities available in telecommunications to students in Nebraska. Also, the session will highlight what students will need to do to obtain one of these new positions.
The second session, featuring Dr. Tim Obermier, a UNK associate professor of industrial technology, will speak about the demand for quality college graduates with an understanding of data networking and business management.
