The Centennial Lecture Series at the University of Nebraska at Kearney will continue with a presentation by Dr. Wayne Briner at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 29.
Dr. Briner, a UNK psychology professor, will speak about The Depleted Uranium Controversy: Silver Bullet or Nuclear Weapon? The presentation will take place in Room 310 of the Nebraskan Student Union.
Depleted uranium (DU) is a by-product of the nuclear energy industry and is the key ingredient in anti-armor munitions used by the United States military. Anti-armor is any military vehicle with armor. Some groups argue that the United States is using nuclear weapons, because the anti-armor munitions contain uranium, a nuclear material.
According to Dr. Briner, the news media and other concerned groups claim that DU use is producing wide-spread radiation contamination across large regions with devastating effects on soldiers and civilian populations. The military argues that DU is largely innocuous with little risk to human health or the environment.
The Thursday lecture is one in a series of brown-bag luncheons being presented monthly. Beverages and a dessert will be provided.
The series is free and open to the campus community and the general public.
