Brett Blank of Pierce has been named the 2005 Recreation Major of the Year by the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
The award is given annually to a student who excels in academics and leadership, and actively participates in the recreation profession.
Blank, a recreation major with an emphasis in natural resource management, was a member of the Recreation Majors Club where he served as president this past year. Before graduating in May, Blank completed an internship at Grand Teton National Park where he worked at the visitors’ center and led snowshoe hikes for tourists. Blank was honored at the UNK College of Education Honors Night held earlier this month.
Dr. Marta Moorman, an associate professor in the Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation and Blank’s faculty adviser, described Blank as, “the complete package.”
“He’s everything we look for in the recreation profession,” she said. “He has a great attitude, gets along well with people, is not afraid to try new things and is good at almost everything he tries.”
Blank is currently employed at Ponca State Park on the Missouri River in northeast Nebraska where he works as a naturalist.
“Brett will be an outstanding addition to our profession,” Dr. Moorman said.
