KEARNEY – The Gamma Phi Beta sorority will host its annual Moonball fundraiser 6:30-10 p.m. Oct. 18 at the Health and Sports Center and Cushing Coliseum on the University of Nebraska at Kearney campus.
This year’s event, which supports Girls on the Run, is a three-on-three, double-elimination basketball tournament with men’s and women’s divisions. Concessions, a meal, awards and activities such as a photo booth and “knockout” basketball game are also part of the evening.
The entry fee is $21 per three-person team, with registration available by contacting any Gamma Phi Beta member or emailing Grace Magill, the sorority’s public relations vice president, at magillge@lopers.unk.edu. Registration tables will be set up 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays inside the Nebraskan Student Union and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Health and Sports Center.
Meal tickets are $5 each in advance, or $6 at the event. The meal includes a hot dog or hamburger, chips and drink.
Cash, check or Venmo payments are accepted for entry fees, meal tickets and donations.
All proceeds from the event will benefit Girls on the Run, which is Gamma Phi Beta’s philanthropic partner.
“Gamma Phi Beta’s philanthropic motto is ‘building strong girls,’ and Girls on the Run does just that for thousands of young ladies every year,” Magill said.
The nonprofit organization inspires girls ages 8 to 13 to be joyful, healthy and confident using experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running. Certified volunteers meet with participating girls twice a week to teach life skills through interactive lessons and running games. At the end of each season, the girls and their coaches complete a 5K, providing a tangible sense of achievement for the youths and framework for reaching life goals.
