Nate Summerfield of Wayne and Sarah Nordhues of Kearney have been crowned 2009 Homecoming King and Queen at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.
The two were crowned at the annual Lip Sync competition held last night (Thursday, Oct. 22) in the UNK Health and Sports Center.
Royalty will be featured in the Homecoming Parade which begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday (Oct. 17). Members of the royal court and their families will join UNK Chancellor Doug Kristensen in the Nebraskan Student Union Skybox for the football game on Saturday. Royalty and the court will be introduced during half-time.
Summerfield is the son of Sheryl and the late Marty Summerfield of Wayne. Summerfield, who was nominated by social fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha, is the UNK student body vice president. A junior majoring in business finance with a minor in political science, Summerfield is Pi Kappa Alpha president, a member of Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) and a student Diplomat. He is also active in Loper Liaisons and Beta Gamma Sigma honor society. Last summer, he was on the UNK Summer Advising and Enrollment team, and this past year, he was the recipient of the Mortar Board Outstanding Sophomore award.
Nordhues is the daughter of Bob and Patti Nordhues of Kearney. A junior majoring in elementary and special education, Nordhues was nominated by Loper Liaisons, for which she serves as vice president of member education. She is also vice president of recruitment for social sorority Alpha Phi, a Chancellor”s Ambassador, student Diplomat and a member of Student Education Association of Nebraska (SEAN). Last summer, she was a student leader for Summer Advising and Enrollment. She is also a former member, and co-captain, of the Sapphires dance team and a dance instructor at Just for Kix. She is also Kappa Delta Pi honor society secretary.

2009 King Candidates
Grand Island– Brad Green. Green is the son of Kevin and Linda Green of Grand Island. He is representing Loper Liaisons. He is a senior majoring in secondary history and special education. Green is a member of social fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon, Loper Liaisons, Chancellor”s Ambassadors, student government, Christian Student Fellowship, Summer Advising and Enrollment and campus Diplomats. He is a member of the executive board for St. Jude”s “Up Til Dawn” fund-raising event.
Humphrey– Anthony McPhillips. Phillips is the son of Eugene and Maureen McPhillips of Humphrey. He is representing Mantor Hall. A senior majoring in elementary education and physical education K-12, McPhillips is the second oldest in a family of 12 children. He is a student senator for the College of Education, a resident adviser for Mantor Hall, a member of the National Residence Hall Honor society and a member of social fraternity Phi Gamma Delta.
Morrill– Jordan Gonzales. Gonzales is the son of Lupe and Josie Gonzales of Morrill. A junior political science major, Gonzales was nominated by student government. He is a recipient of the Nebraska Secretary of State Citation award, the UNK Greek of the Month award and the UNK Student Senator of the Year award.
2009 Queen Candidates
Creston– Emily Wemhoff. Wemhoff is the daughter of David and Geraldine Wemhoff of Creston. She is representing Mantor Hall. A public relations major with a psychology minor, she currently serves as a mentor for the Thompson Scholar Learning Community, a member of the UNK Nebraskats show choir and a Chancellor”s Ambassador. Her achievements include being on the Deans’ List and membership in Students in Mass Media (SIMM). In 2002, Wemhoff founded Project S.A.F.E., which has earned her numerous honors including the Seventeen Magazine All-Star award, National Caring award, Mountain Dew Voltage Scholarship and Prudential Spirit of Community award.
Grand Island– Andrea May. May is the daughter of Chris and Ellen May of Grand Island. A junior majoring in elementary education with a coaching endorsement, she represents Antelope Hall, where she is a resident adviser. She is president of the Residential Adviser Council, vice president of philanthropy in the National Residence Hall Honor society (NRHH) and serves on the executive board of the UNK Loper Legion. In addition, May is involved in the UNK Honors Program, Phi Eta Sigma, Student Education Association of Nebraska (SEAN) and the Newman Center.
Wayne– Regan Ruhl. Ruhl is the daughter of Rocky and Sylvia Ruhl of Wayne. A senior majoring in sports and business administration, Ruhl was nominated by UNK student government. She is the director of student organizations and affairs for student government. She is also a member of the UNK Honors Program, vice president of Phi Eta Sigma honor society, an intramural student assistant, an intern for the 2009 Loper Women”s Walk and a member of Sports Administration Major (SAM) club.
