UNK-Cultures from all over the world will congregate at the University of Nebraska at Kearney during “Exploring New Destinations,” a daylong foreign language fair on March 30 sponsored by the UNK Department of Modern Languages.
The foreign language fair is geared toward high school students who are studying a foreign language. Twenty-three Nebraska high schools, some as far away at Kimball, Broken Bow and York will participate in the event.
Rodney Miller, dean of the College of Fine Arts and Humanities will welcome over 500 students to the fair. UNK modern language students will demonstrate native dances from foreign lands, sing songs in Spanish and speak about experiences encountered while studying abroad for the first portion of the day.
Participants then have the option to compete in a college bowl, attend a language mini lesson or listen to a poetry recitation. Teams from some of the high schools will compete in the college bowl and answer trivia questions about France, Germany and Spain. Other students can hear international UNK students speak about their native countries during the language mini lesson or listen to poetry by a foreign author memorized and recited by a high school student.
Following an international buffet, teams from several high schools will perform skits in the foreign languages they are studying, promoting countries that speak French, Spanish or German.
This is the 26th year UNK has sponsored the foreign language fair for area high school students.
