UNK– Nearly 80 industrial technology majors from the University of Nebraska at Kearney are spending their summer taking part in internships across the state of Nebraska and 13 other states.
A summer internship is a requirement for students in the Department of Industrial Technology who are majoring in construction management, industrial distribution or telecommunications management.
“Students find out about internships through career fairs that are held in the spring and the fall,” said Brenda Jochum, internship director for the UNK Department of Industrial Technology. “We work throughout the year to build relationships with companies, and we forward that information on to students so they can apply for positions.” The students participate in the 12-week, paid internship. The pay ranges between $8 to $22 an hour.
“Students learn about the industry and themselves while interning,” Jochum said. “They learn what they enjoy and do well, and what they need to do to improve. These internships offer insight into future career paths for many students.
“The program is interactive throughout the summer,” she said. “Students write weekly journals, post discussion boards and participate in online video chats.” This is the first summer the interns will be using video conferencing on the Web. The students will participate in three to four video chats with other interns throughout the summer to learn about other students’ companies.
