Dr. Fendt’s lecture is a response to the outrage, in many places, that followed Pope Benedict’s speech at Regensburg University. It attempts to practice (rather than explain) Augustine’s rule for charitable interpretation and it attempts to exhibit (as well as say) the grounds for charitable reading, beginning with Augustine’s own example of reading the first book of Moses.
