UNK– Two long-time band directors at the University of Nebraska at Kearney will conduct their ensembles for the last time at UNK this Sunday (April 25) in what the two are aptly calling “The Final Concert.”
“The Final Concert” marks the last UNK performance for Dr. Gary Davis, who is retiring from the UNK Department of Music & Performing Arts, and Dr. Neal Schnoor, UNK director of bands, who has accepted an administrative position at another campus. The two will direct the Symphonic Band and the Wind Ensemble, respectively, in a 3 p.m. concert in the Fine Arts Recital Hall.
This year marks the 36th year of teaching for Dr. Davis. He will, however, continue in his role as director of the UNK Honors Program, a position he has held since 2003. In May, Dr. Schnoor, who also served as coordinator of K-12/secondary education at UNK, will leave the UNK campus to begin a new appointment as dean of the School of Education and Counseling at Wayne State College.
The Wind Ensemble, under the direction of Dr. Schnoor, will open the concert with “Mother Earth” by David Maslanka, followed by “Ballade” by Alfred Reed. Other selections include “Piano Concerto 2, in C Minor, Op. 18 – Mvmt. 1 (1901)” by Sergei Rachmaninov and “Accolade” by Timothy Mahr. Soloists and guest performers will include senior Troy Ehmke of Beatrice on the alto saxophone, and Dr. James Cook, UNK music professor, and Ann Bauer of Kearney, both on piano.
The UNK Symphonic Band, directed by Dr. Davis, will perform several works, including “Firework (1992”) by Jan Van der Roost, “On a Hymnsong of Philip Bliss” by David Holsinger and “The Chimes of Liberty” by Edwin Franko Goldman.
