UNK– Native American Hopi artist and musician Ed Kabotie will perform original music and lyrics on the native flute and guitar at the Museum of Nebraska Art from 6:15-7:15 p.m. on Saturday, March 27.
“My personal goal as an artist is to creatively express the virtues of Native America through music and art, and to remind the world of our heroes,” Kabotie said. “Whether literal or mythic, Native American history is full of virtues and morals that can equip us for the future.”
The performance, which is free and open to the public, is the final event in the University of Nebraska at Kearney cultural diversity panel and cultural art workshop symposium organized by Lori Santos, UNK assistant professor of art.
Kabotie, a Hopi Native American, is from the Santa Clara Pueblo in New Mexico and the Hopi village of Shungopavi. He specializes in etch work and often collaborates with relatives who produce polished pottery. In addition, Kabotie creates paintings, silver jewelry and carvings.
Kabotie’s grandfather from Santa Clara, Edward Dozier, was an anthropologist who inspired Kabotie to research and write about Native American history. Kabotie, also a percussionist, has recently released a seven-song demo CD, titled “Origins,” that features his bilingual compositions accompanied by acoustic guitar and native flute.
The symposium takes place during the day Saturday in the Fine Arts Building and will host up to 20 Nebraska teachers and 40 students from across the state who have shown an interest in a career in art or art education. The panel topics and times include “Culture, Art and Education” at 10 a.m. and at 12:30 p.m., “Envisioning Myself as an Artist Educator.”
“The symposium will begin at 9:30 a.m. and go until 5 p.m.,” Santos said. “We will have the panel discussions and art workshop on Hopi overlay jewelry making with Ed Kabotie for teachers, and pinhole cameras and printmaking with UNK faculty for students.”
