UNK– More community service projects are needed by Friday, April 2, for the more than 150 University of Nebraska at Kearney students who have volunteered for the 5th annual The Big Event.
The Big Event, a day of service to the Kearney community provided by students, faculty and staff, is scheduled for Saturday, April 10.
“At this point we have very few work sites,” said Rebecca Hoesing of Laurel, The Big Event chair. “We would love to help the community in any way possible.”
The Big Event serves nonprofit organizations, individuals who are physically unable to complete a project, or those unable to pay to have such services. To have work done, or for more information, individuals or groups need to contact Hoesing at unkbigevent10@gmail.com or the Facebook group, UNK-The Big Event 2010.
According to Hoesing, “The Big Event is a way for students at UNK to give back to the community that supports our institution. It is important to show our appreciation for all that Kearney has done for UNK.” Regan Ruhl, a UNK student from Wayne, has also helped organize the event.
The Big Event, an annual event at more than 70 universities across the country, is one of the largest student-run community service efforts in the nation. In Kearney, the UNK volunteers take part in service projects that benefit nonprofit organizations and individuals in the Kearney area.
“Students will partake in a number of community service projects, from yard work to spring cleaning to building a house with Habitat for Humanity,” Hoesing said.
The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. at Foster Field. From there, volunteers will begin working in the community at a variety of locations by 10:30 a.m.
Sponsors for the event include: Moonlight Embroidery, Runza, Pizza Hut, Old Chicago, Valentino’s, Sax’s Pizza, Thunderhead Brewing, Papa John’s and Little Ceasars Pizza.
