A commemorative event for the soon-to-be razed historical Kearney Power House, located just north and across the street from the University of Nebraska at Kearney Health and Sports Center has been set for 3 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22. in the atrium of the College of Education Building on the UNK campus.
Speakers will include several members of the Spillway Committee, a group that was formed several years ago to find ways to preserve and enhance the old powerhouse and develop a people-friendly, park-like area in the Spillway area.
The Spillway Park along the canal will continue to be enhanced in the future, but the power house building, which was constructed in the late 1800’s, is no longer structurally sound and will be torn down to make way for a new Central Utility Plant to serve the growing UNK campus, and a relocated and enlarged electrical power sub-station operated by NPPD.
NPPD’s still-functioning hydroelectric facility, including the round tower building and the spillway itself, will, of course, remain in place.
UNK Chancellor Douglas A. Kristensen will preside and introduce the speakers as follows:
– Doralene Weed, former member of the NPPD Board of Directors, keynote speaker
– State Sen. Joel Johnson, chair of the Spillway Committee
– Stan Clouse – Kearney Mayor and Retail Account Executive for NPPD
