New ‘Heart to Heart’ podcast episode features Dr. Neal Schnoor, priority candidate for UNK chancellor

The University of Nebraska System has released the newest episode of its “Heart to Heart” podcast series.

Hosted by University of Nebraska President Dr. Jeffrey Gold, the podcast features in-depth conversations with leaders, educators, researchers and alums and university partners who are making a difference across the state and beyond.

In this episode, Gold sits down with Dr. Neal Schnoor, the priority candidate to become the next chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Following a national search, the University of Nebraska announced Schnoor as the priority candidate in late April. A Nebraska native, first-generation college graduate and former longtime UNK faculty member and administrator, Schnoor brings more than 30 years of experience in higher education leadership, instruction and strategic planning.

The conversation explores Schnoor’s rural Nebraska roots, leadership philosophy and vision for UNK’s future.

Schnoor reflects on the moment that began to shape his leadership philosophy: watching marching band students out on the field during his early years at UNK.

“I saw so many talented students standing there waiting for my instruction – students who were going to be young teachers and leaders,” he says. “I looked into a principle-centered leadership model and taught those students to focus on a vision of empowerment and accountability.”

Schnoor also reflects on some of the leadership lessons he has learned leading Northern State University, including the importance of relationship-building and strategic focus.

“I believe the greatest opportunities begin with visibility and building relationships,” he says. “It will be key to clarify a compelling vision and strategies and then focus on increasing enrollment and retention.”

As a first-generation student raised in a rural community, Schnoor has a deep connection to UNK’s mission to uplift students, their families and their communities.

“UNK has a very personalized approach to help our students succeed,” he says. “We want all students – especially first-generation students – to feel they’ve had the benefits of growing up in a family and community that experiences the benefits of higher education.”

If confirmed by the Board of Regents, Schnoor says his immediate priority as chancellor would be to listen deeply and build trust.

“I would like to use student feedback to ensure that we’re providing a truly student-centered educational experience,” he says. “We need to not only grow and retain students here at UNK, but retain our high school graduates in the state of Nebraska, as well.”

In the podcast, Gold reflects on Schnoor’s past and looks ahead to the future.

“As someone who’s walked the halls of UNK as an educator – and now may become its next chancellor – his commitment to students, faculty and staff and the Kearney community shines through,” Gold says.

“UNK, Kearney and Nebraska are home,” Schnoor says. “I am so excited to get to work.”
