Kearney native Lynelle Fritzen brings a wealth of knowledge about her community and professional connections to her role as associate director of business services at UNK.
Before starting at UNK four years ago, she worked as a fitness specialist at CHI Health Good Samaritan and sports development manager at the Kearney Visitors Bureau, where she developed relationships with key community stakeholders.
“This positions me to contribute significantly to the ongoing development and success of both UNK and the broader Kearney community. By tapping into my network, I can facilitate collaborations, advocate for shared initiatives and ensure UNK remains closely aligned with the needs of the community,” said Fritzen, who graduated from UNK in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a minor in health science.
Tell us about your job:
I assist with the daily operations of the Business Services Department. This includes oversight of areas such as the dining hall, Loper Spirit Shop, exclusive contracts and revenue agreements. In addition, I lead a variety of RFPs (requests for proposals) for campus operations, create campus policy and do some grant writing.
Most recently, I have been working closely on the Regional Engagement Center project as we finalize the construction phase and begin to look toward furnishing, installing technology and creating policy/usage documents for the building. Upon completion, I will initiate the coordination of programming and events within the space, aiming to create a seamless integration of UNK, the local community and greater Nebraska.
What’s the most enjoyable part of this work?
The most fulfilling aspect of my job lies in the constant opportunity for learning and problem-solving. Each day brings a fresh challenge, requiring creative thinking and adaptability. Furthermore, the ability to foster collaboration and establish connections between the university and community is truly rewarding.
What do you love most about UNK?
The campus culture, combined with a wide range of programs and resources, creates a well-rounded educational experience within a vibrant community for our students. Beyond academics, UNK stands as a cornerstone in Kearney, playing a vital role as one of the top employers in the area. This not only provides employment opportunities but serves as a hub for collaboration, generating valuable learning experiences for individuals and contributing to Kearney’s economic growth.
What hobbies do you have outside work?
Outside of my professional commitments, I find immense joy and fulfillment being engaged in my kids’ activities. In addition to coaching their soccer teams, I serve in their schools, teach elementary Junior Achievement and assist with vacation Bible school and summer youth programming at our church.
The ability to watch the kids learn and grow in athletics, academics and their faith is both rewarding and heartwarming. Additionally, I have served on numerous boards in our community and currently sit on the Leadership Kearney Board of Directors. In between all the activities, I prioritize my health and well-being by running and lifting.
