Senior showcase explores social issues through musical theatre

The UNK Department of Music, Theatre and Dance is presenting its senior musical theatre showcase, “Bring Me to Light,” at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Miriam Drake Theatre on campus.

A capstone project for musical theatre majors Steven Boldt of Amherst, Hannah Petersen of Omaha and Maximus Wohler of North Platte, the program explores social issues such as depression, substance abuse and family relationships through the musical theatre canon. The performers’ mission is to speak for themselves and respectfully represent the stories of others – not through imitation or appropriation, but with a sincere voice acknowledging the issues they pose are deeper and more complex than can be presented in a single performance. Audience members are encouraged to continue the conversation.

“Bring Me to Light” includes 11 selections. Two humorous duets bring levity and balance to this program of serious repertoire.

A second performance, supported by a grant from Cox Communications, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Monday at Benson Theatre in Omaha. Both events are free and open to the public. “Bring Me to Light” is appropriate for high school through adult audiences.

The UNK seniors will also present the showcase Tuesday for Omaha Public Schools students.
