UNK Q&A: Six freshmen talk Loper life, backflips and a love of winter

The University of Nebraska at Kearney is welcoming roughly 900 first-time freshmen to campus this semester.

Writing specialist Tyler Ellyson dropped by Saturday morning’s Blue Gold Welcome Week breakfast to learn a little about six of these students and what brought them to UNK.

Vanessa Lo, chemistry (pre-pharmacy), Lexington

Why is UNK so amazing?
“I like the diversity. It makes you feel nice to know there are all different types of people here and we all come together as one.”

What’s your favorite movie?
“My favorite movie is ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower.’ It’s just so cute. And there’s a happy ending, which I really like.”

Why did you choose UNK?
“I chose UNK because it felt the most homey. I just love the vibes I got from UNK. It felt like the best step to take.”

If you could travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
“Canada, because Canada is cold. I love the vibes of Canada, it’s all nice and wintry, and I just love winter.”

What are you most excited about entering your first year at UNK?
“Meeting new friends and becoming an educator who will make a difference.”

Tell me something people would be surprised to know about you:
“I can say the alphabet backward.”

During your first day on campus, what’s the most important thing you learned?
“To do you. Do you, and you have fun. You don’t need to worry about what other people think.”

What’s your most unique talent?
“I can do a backflip. That’s a pretty good talent.”

Haylee O’Dey, business administration with accounting emphasis, Hastings

What’s the best part of attending UNK?
“I’m on the golf team and I’m able to continue playing a sport I’m passionate about while furthering my education.”

Name one thing on your bucket list:
“I want to go to a PGA major. I don’t know where, but just a professional PGA Tour event.”

What’s your favorite thing about UNK?
“Probably the size. It’s not too big, it’s not too small. You can be yourself, but also not feel left out.”

Who is your favorite musical act?
“A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie. He just makes good music.”
