LINCOLN – University of Nebraska at Kearney Chancellor Doug Kristensen has been recognized by the Nebraska School Activities Association with one of its most prestigious awards.
He was given the NSAA’s Distinguished Service Award at Saturday’s state basketball tournament in Lincoln for his overall contributions to high school activities and service to the NSAA.
The NSAA noted Kristensen’s longtime support of its state speech, golf and cross country championships hosted at UNK and in Kearney. He has volunteered and served in numerous capacities at the Nebraska State Golf Championships for many years and is a rules official for the Nebraska Golf Association.
Kristensen also was recognized for his active leadership in numerous local, state and national civic and professional organizations, including the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators Higher Education Committee of 50.
Kristensen has been chancellor at UNK for nearly 16 years, a position he took after serving 12 years as a Nebraska state senator for the 37th Legislative District and four years as speaker of the legislature. He also operated a private law practice for 21 years (1981-2002) and served as the Kearney County Attorney (1983-88).
