KEARNEY – Gilbert Hinga was recently appointed interim dean for the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. He will serve through June 2015.
He joins UNK with nearly 20 years of experience in student life leadership and support.
Hinga was most recently vice president for student affairs and dean of students at Hastings College. Prior to that, he was associate vice president for student life at Tarleton State University in Stephenville, Texas, where he also served nearly 10 years as assistant vice president for wellness and career development.
His earlier positions included assistant director for programming and multicultural services at Miami University (Ohio) and resident hall director and manager at Warren Wilson College (Asheville, N.C.)
As the senior student affairs officer, Hinga is responsible for the following UNK offices and departments: Academic Success (Disability Services, Student Support Services, and Learning Commons); Counseling and Health Care (Counseling Care, Health Care, Peer Health Education, and Women’s Center); Kearney Bound; Residence Life; and Student Life (the Nebraskan Student Union, Greek Affairs, Multicultural Affairs, Student Activities and Organizations, Student Conduct and Leadership, and Spirit Squads).
He has extensive experience in mental health and wellness areas, including preventative outreach educational programs in college settings and has received grants for alcohol education and risk prevention, cross-cultural leadership and orientation for international students.
Hinga earned his doctorate in professional psychology from Wright State University and his bachelor’s degree from Warren Wilson College.
