Nebraska poets Dwaine Spieker of Wayne and Jeff Lacey of Ralston will open the 2012 Poetry on the Bricks series at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Book Ends Used Book Shop, 2218 Central Ave., in Kearney.

“We are honored to host these two fine poets in conjunction with the University of Nebraska at Kearney Reynolds poetry reading series,” said Dr. Don Welch, UNK English professor and Reynolds Chair in Creative Writing. “We chose this venue as it serves as an intimate setting that a core of people will come back to.”

Poetry on the Bricks, which features poetry readings by local and regional poets, is free and open to the public.

Spieker is a high school and college teacher in Wayne. He has published “Garden of Stars” through All Along Press in St. Louis, Mo. The book was named Best Book of Poetry in 2009 by a Nebraskan by the Nebraska Center for the Book.

Lacey is a high school writing teacher who lives and works in Ralston. His poetry has been published in the “Hiram Poetry Review,” “The Midwest Quarterly,” “Christianity and Literature” journal, “Nebraska Life” and the 2011 Nebraska Poet’s Calendar.

“As a special feature this year, several students from my poetry classes at UNK will read at each of the readings scheduled during the first semester,” Dr. Welch said. “Additionally, after the featured readers, there will be an open mike time for anyone with original poetry to share.”
