Police and Parking Services at the University of Nebraska at Kearney has received a $5,807 grant to step up alcohol-related law enforcement efforts Aug. 23 – Sept. 15, according to Michelle Hamaker, UNK Police and Parking Services director.
The grant, which was awarded by the Highway Safety Division of the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles, will be used to pay officers for overtime hours. The enforcement efforts will take place between 9 p.m. and 3 a.m. on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, the times when the department sees the highest number of alcohol incidents on campus.
“Our enforcement efforts will cover the campus and the streets adjacent to the campus,” Hamaker said. “We want to make individuals on the university campus aware of the laws governing the use of alcohol, university policies about alcohol and for it to be known that these violations are not tolerated.
“By having a high level of enforcement at the start of the school year, we hope to curb the percentage of alcohol related offenses through the remainder of the year,” she said. This is the fourth year UNK has received the grant.
