Martin Segovia, vice president and athletic director at Garden City High School, has been named the Nebraska Cultural Unity Conference “Alumnus of the Year” for 2012 at the University of Nebraska at Kearney.

Segovia received the award at the conference, which was held recently on the campus.

Segovia graduated from UNK with a double major in history and physical education in 1995. During his time at UNK, Segovia was a three time All-American and two time National Runner Up at the NCAA II national wrestling tournaments. He was inducted into the UNK Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009.

After graduating from UNK, the Garden City native returned to coach wrestling and football at Garden City High School where he served as the head wrestling coach. In addition, Segovia has been active in the community with several Christian youth groups and established a wrestling program for youth that uses wrestling to teach character, ethics and leadership skills.

“In recognition of Martin Segovia’s successful career in education, for being an excellent representative of UNK and for all of the positive things he has done for the kids of Garden City, we were pleased to recognize him as the Nebraska Cultural Unity Conference Alumnus of the Year,” said Dr. Ed Scantling, dean of the UNK College of Education. “In addition, over the years, Martin has brought several groups of Garden City students to UNK for the Nebraska Cultural Unity Conference.”
