The C.T. Ryan Library at the University of Nebraska at Kearney is letting library users to “wash away their fines” with a donation of shampoo, conditioner and other personal care products during the National Library Week, April 15-21.

Donations of these personal goods are being accepted in conjunction with the Campus Kitchen at UNK. Donated items will be used to help Holdrege residents who are still suffering the effects of ice storms earlier this year.

This year’s drive, which takes place during National Library Week, will not be the first such event to take place at C.T. Ryan Library. The library staff last accepted donations in the form of food during National Library Week in 1996.

Dee Goedert, head of access services at C.T. Ryan, said the event is held partly in tribute to the founder of the original event, Mike Herbison, who was dean of library services 1992-2004. Herbison passed away on March 29 of this year.

“Because this will take place during National Library Week, it makes the event a little more poignant,” Goedert said. “The week is for the celebration of libraries, as well as the services they provide to communities.”

Library patrons will receive a $5 fine waiver for bringing in any of the following items: shampoo, conditioner, bar soap (3 pack), deodorant, toothpaste and brushes, toilet paper, facial tissues, paper towels, baby wipes, disposable razors, hand lotion, detergent and laundry soap, dryer sheets, dish soap and kitchen cleanser.

In addition, $10 in fines will be waived for patrons who donate small packages of diapers or pull-ups. Any additional donations will also be accepted.

Donors may bring items to the circulation desk at the C.T. Ryan Library. Fine waivers do not apply to lost or damaged items.
