Eight members of the University of Nebraska at Kearney Wind Ensemble have been selected to participate in the 2012 Nebraska Intercollegiate Band in Lincoln in March.
The students, who will join more than 60 musicians selected from around the state, will begin practicing as a band on Thursday at the University of Nebraska – Lincoln, and will perform a concert at 8 p.m. on Friday, March 2, in the Kimball Recital Hall.
Pieces performed in the concert will include “Dance of the Jesters” by Tchaikovsky, “Nocturne” by Scriabin, “Sketches on a Tudor Psalm” by Tull and “Stomp” by Biedenbender. The performance will be free and open to the public.
“I first identify students who are interested in the band, and then I nominate them to a central committee, which is made up of other college band directors in Nebraska,” said Dr. Duane Bierman, UNK director of bands and assistant professor of music and percussion. “From there, students are selected from all participating colleges and universities to fill a prescribed instrumentation.”
The band, which will be directed by Dr. Rodney Dorsey, associate director of bands at the University of Michigan, is sponsored by the Nebraska State Bandmasters Association. The Friday evening performance is a part of the organization’s annual conference at UNL.
