REYNOLDS SERIES PRESENTS AUTHOR JOY HARJO TUESDAY, NOV. 15, AT UNK

Poet and Native American Music Award winner Joy Harjo will read from her work on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the Merryman Performing Arts Center, located at 225 West 22nd St. in Kearney.

The reading, which will begin at 8:30 p.m., is part of the 2011 Reynolds Series at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. The reading is free and open to the public.

Harjo, a member of the Mvskoke Nation, has written seven books of poetry, including “How We Became Human – New and Selected Poems,” “The Woman Who Fell From the Sky” and “She Had Some Horses.”

She is the recipient of the New Mexico Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts, the Lifetime Achievement Award, Native Writers Circle of the Americas, the William Carlos Williams Award from the Poetry Society of America, the 2009 Eagle Spirit Achievement Award and the Native American Music Award (NAMMY) for Best Female Artist of the Year. She was named a United States Artists Rasmuson Fellow and received a $50,000 fellowship.
The Reynolds Series features writers from across the United States. The next presentation in the series will feature the Reynolds Poetry and Creative Writing Scholarship recipients who will present their work on Wednesday, Nov. 16.
