UNK– The annual Blue and Gold Welcome Week Community Showcase and Chancellor’s Picnic at the University of Nebraska at Kearney are set for Friday, Aug. 21.
The Blue and Gold Community Showcase is set from 4-8 p.m., and the Chancellor’s Picnic, which is free and open to the campus and community, is set from 5-6:30 p.m. Last year, more than 5,000 people attended both the community showcase and Chancellor’s Picnic.
The events are part of the annual UNK Blue and Gold Welcome Week, which takes place Aug. 20-29. Events scheduled during the welcome week are designed to help students become acquainted with the UNK campus and Kearney community.
“The Blue and Gold Community Showcase is an opportunity for businesses, services, campus organizations, and campus offices to welcome UNK students to both the campus and community,” said Tim Danube, Nebraskan Student Union associate director.
Highlights of the showcase include caricaturist Dirk Christensen, wax mold of hands by Loper Programming and Activities Council (LPAC), the National Guard rock climbing wall, and balloon animals made by clowns Scott and Teresa Sweet.
“The showcase is a great opportunity for students and the community to connect with each other and for the community to show students what is has to offer,” said Brandon Benitz, assistant to the dean of Student Life.
