New Marketing Advisory Council Formed

A new Marketing Advisory Council has been formed for UNK. The council, which is chaired by Curt Carlson, vice chancellor for University Relations, will provide marketing advice to the University Relations staff and UNK administration on all aspects of University marketing.

“Although the specific agenda and tasking for the council will evolve, partly as a result of council discussions,” Carlson said, “the objective is clear: To provide insight, wisdom, collaboration, experience and creativity for the benefit of the Office of University Relations as we go about the day-to-day task of creating and implementing an effective integrated marketing program for the University.”

The charge to the council includes:
• responding to the goals of the University Strategic Plan and other institutional goal- and objective-setting processes
• defining and developing the best assets of the University as distinctive competitive advantages
• creating and implementing advertising and communications programs and strategies that will help the institution compete more effectively for students, the best faculty, experienced and effective staff, financial resources and reputation
• creating an environment among constituent groups that wil be more conducive to fundraising, mobilizing alumni, communicating more effectively what “higher” education is all about, and recruiting more competitively for the talented and imaginative students

Among the group’s first tasks will be the evaluation of current and recent marketing campaigns, including Sacco, Stamatsand the recent marketing initiatives Carlson has led. An additional resource for the group will be Advancing Higher Education in Uncertain Times, a book by Larry Lauer.

University Relations staff will serve as ex officio members. They include: Christina Frazer, Publications and Printing; Glennis Nagel, Media Relations and Internal Communications; Linda Schroeder, marketing; and Brian Spradlin, UNK Webmaster.
